In health care, maintaining quality of care protects the public, and it starts with being able to act in an emergency. Depending on your role — a nurse governed by the professional order or a support worker caring for older or home-based clients — mastering CPR and first aid is sometimes an expected competency, sometimes a condition set by the employer. Here is what the Cameroonian framework provides, and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

In Cameroon, nurses and other medical-health professionals are governed by the Ordre des Professions Médico-Sanitaires (OPMS), which oversees registration and professional conduct. Practice requires keeping clinical skills current, against a backdrop of ongoing LMD reforms aimed at harmonizing and raising the standard of health-worker training.

As a matter of professional duty, a nurse remains bound to give aid and to be able to initiate life-saving manoeuvres in an emergency; keeping CPR skills current is part of what the profession expects, even in the absence of an hours standard imposed by the order.

There is no national mandatory continuing-education hours standard tied to license renewal for these professions in Cameroon; the OPMS governs registration and professional conduct, and LMD reforms are ongoing. Keeping skills current is nonetheless expected and largely employer-driven.

For support staff — care workers, home-based carers and nurse-companions — caring for vulnerable people means being able to respond to choking, bleeding or cardiac arrest. In practice, home-care and eldercare employers expect, alongside care-worker training, a recognized first-aid and CPR certificate, available from age 15; this stand-alone certificate, distinct from a diploma, meets that expectation and must be kept current.
